You may notice this role used to be called UI/UX Engineer. The rename is deliberate. Anyone can prompt an AI into producing screens; what cannot be prompted into existence is taste. We are hiring a designer in the original sense of the word: someone with a design language of their own, an eye that tells good from bad in seconds, and the conviction to argue for it. AI will sit beside you as a power tool, and we will hand you the best of them, but the human touch is the product: the aesthetics, the restraint, the craft. Phi Browser is made for humans to live in, and you will define how it looks, feels and behaves.

• Own the design language of Phi Browser: visual identity, interaction patterns, motion, and the thousand small decisions that make a product feel inevitable
• Take features from idea to shipped: flows, wireframes, high-fidelity mocks, prototypes, and the fit-and-finish passes after engineering has had its way
• Build and defend the design system against entropy, inconsistency and slop
• Partner with research and engineering so design intent survives implementation intact
• Review what ships: catch the misaligned pixel, the wrong easing, the machine-generated filler before our users do

• Taste, demonstrated. Portfolios beat resumes here, and a great student portfolio absolutely counts; what we are reading it for is original thought, not tool proficiency
• The ability to tell good design from bad design quickly, and to articulate why in concrete terms; you know AI slop when you see it, and you know craftsmanship when you see that
• The ability to produce designs and ideas bare-handed with conventional tools, from pen and paper to Figma. AI-assisted is welcome; AI-dependent is disqualifying
• Command of the fundamentals: typography, colour, spacing, hierarchy, motion. Able to tell the difference between Arial and Helvetica, and to care
• Proficient in reading complex technical material in English and comfortable communicating in written English
• Genuine curiosity and self-driven learning, including the habit of finding and mastering the right tools, AI tools very much included
• Professional working conduct, good collaboration, and comfort with startup pace and global, cross-timezone teamwork
• An unreasonable obsession with quality and detail, and belief in what Phi Browser exists to do

• A multi-disciplinary creative practice: animation, music, video, painting, photography, type design, anything made with your own hands. Being creative is a virtue in this realm
• Motion design and prototyping chops (Rive, Framer, Lottie, After Effects)
• Enough implementation literacy to know what is cheap and what is expensive to build, and to speak with engineers in their language
• Experience designing for macOS or native desktop apps
